A Heresy of My Own (Part 2) | Is Jesus a Republican?

Is Jesus a Republican?

I used to think he was. I remember when Jimmy Carter was President. The adults at the church I attended as a child seemed genuinely conflicted about this. Jimmy Carter claimed to be a born-again Christian, but how could this be so? Jimmy Carter was a Democrat and a supporter of the Equal Rights Amendment. Jesus did not approve. Jimmy Carter’s salvation was, at best, highly suspect.

But when Ronald Reagan came along, Jesus approved. Finally, we had a President who, like Jesus, was for small government, lower taxes, personal responsibility, pro-life, capitalism, the death penalty,  and, most importantly, big defense spending. By the 1984 election, I was thoroughly convinced that Walter Mondale was the devil and God’s purposes for Israel America depended upon Ronald Reagan’s second term.

I wasn’t quite old enough to vote for George H.W. Bush in 1988. I missed the age requirement by just over one month. But I prayed fervently for his victory over Dukakis/Bentsen with great success. Neither my vote or prayer seemed able to grant Bush I a second term. This was followed by 8 years of Bill Clinton. Jesus and I spent a lot of time listening to Rush Limbaugh on WBAP 820 during those years. We raged and we wept and we laughed.

In the church of my adolescence, I remember the “Voting Guides” available in the lobby. These helpful publications detailed the positions of every Federal/State/Local candidate on all the important issues. This non-partisan catalog of platform and policy made it very clear who Jesus wanted us to vote for (Republicans), without making it too obvious.

I was completely convinced that Jesus was a Republican.

And then I read this verse:

Jesus answered, “My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world.”” (John 18:36, ESV)

Jesus is not a Republican. He isn’t a Democrat either. He’s not even (GASP!) an American. He is the King of Kings. His kingdom is righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit. His way of victory is the cross. His way of authority is service and sacrifice. He is the Prince of Peace.

Let’s not pretend that being a Jesus follower fits neatly into a partisan box. You will find some things that align with Jesus in both parties. You will find much that bears no resemblance to Jesus in both parties. I will not see things from Jesus’ perspective through the lens of FOX News or CNN. It is very freeing to realize that the government upon Jesus’ shoulders is ever increasing and has very little to do with our activities in a voting booth or their results.

As a believer, my allegiance is not first to any nation or political party. My allegiance is first to a King and his Kingdom. My patriotism must serve that priority or it is, in its essence, idolatry.

I vote as responsibly as I know how. Recent options have definitely made that difficult. I’m glad to be a citizen of this nation and view the responsibility to vote as a great privilege. But I’ve long since stopped trying to squeeze Jesus into a voting booth or a political party. It’s time that we conform to his image, rather than assuming he has conformed to ours.

  1. Whoah!! And that’ll preach. This truth cuts to the core issue for me – that I conform to Christ rather than ask he conform to mine. The world is weird right now but He is still the one who carries it all on His shoulders. Why then should I worry? Takes the pressure off. And helps me get back to his command – love Him, love people, do the works. I’ll pray for those in authority but reading this was grace and gentle remind to hide myself in Christ and not a political party.

  2. Neither party comes out and says “hey we are going to heal the sick, raise the dead or calm storms.” But then again neither do many churches. Maybe it is time we got back to being like Christ.

  3. I agree with the fact that Jesus is not either a democrat or Republican, I remember the past you refer to, here is my belief, sinners reside in both parties from the top to the bottom, BUT the democrat platform is straight out of satan’s play book. It supports homosexuals, same sex marriage, baby murder, and the LGBT cause. How can a Christian support that? I know for a fact unless changed, those who run as democrats sign a pledge that they will support the democrat platform and the democrat ticket. That is like supporting satan.

    1. I’m sure the Pharisees had similar thoughts about tax-collectors, prostitutes, and Samaritans. So there’s that.
