Meditating on God's Word

Heb 4:12-16
12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. 13 And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account. 14 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

God’s word is not simply a means by which God transmits data. God’s word is alive. God’s word works powerfully to create and transform us. Scripture is not merely a repository of correct history, doctrine, principles and morals. God’s word is a sharp sword in the hands of a sympathetic High Priest who knows how, with his word, to divide soul and spirit, bring to light that which is hidden, and provide grace and mercy to those who are willing to trust him to do his work.

Freedom results from a revelation of truth. We receive a revelation of truth like we receive anything else from God, by faith. Faith results from hearing God speak. This is somewhat circular, for revelation results from faith which results from revelation. Where do I go to begin to hear God’s voice? How do I pursue revelation in my life? How do I allow the High Priest to do his work with the sword of his word? The answer is in the above passage from Hebrews 4:14. We “…hold fast our confession.” The word “confession” means literally “to say the same thing.”

Meditation is the spiritual practice whereby we intentionally pursue increasing revelation from God through his word. We take the truth of what God says in scripture and we pursue revelation! We are not content with head-knowledge. We need God to lift the veil in our hearts and minds and allow us to experience truth. Our role in this process is simply to begin to meditate on his word. We make it the focus of our thoughts. We make it the focus of our mouths. We take the truth of what he says in scripture and “say the same thing” back to him. As we speak his word we hear his word – his word that’s alive and powerful, breathed out by the Holy Spirit. As we do what he will not do for us – think, focus, speak – his word does that which we are unable to do for ourselves. His word produces faith resulting in revelation resulting in transformation.

This overall process of meditation and revelation also works to better attune us to the sound of his voice. As we learn to hear God speak in a revelatory manner to us through scripture, the door is opened for us to hear God speak in scriptural ways (still small voice, dreams, visions, prophetic words, etc.) The more we hear him and experience the transformational power of revelation through his voice, the more deception in our life is replaced with truth, the more we are released to become all he has created and died for us to be.
